"The role of consul was to promote Genoese interests in the various consulates scattered throughout Southern Italy, in Naples, Messina, Palermo and in the eastern and western Mediterranean, especially in Spain. The consulates were the driving force of the networks of local relations and supra-local. The consuls had to demonstrate that they had a personality suited to the delicate role they were going to play. The consuls essentially functioned as essential cornerstones of the data collection and transmission system that was headed by Genoa" (Maria Concetta Calabrese, associate professor Modern history, University of Catania).

Mission of the Ambassadors

The role of the Honorary Ambassadors of Genoa in the world is part of a long historical tradition of the City of Genoa, aimed at dialogue, social and international relations that have made the Superba at the center not only of trade but of diplomacy in the Mediterranean and beyond. The new network of Ambassadors aims, as in ancient times, to strengthen old friendships among many countries of the world with which the Superba has been able to entertain relations, cultural and commercial exchanges. It has always been said that the Genoese have never lived in Genoa, and indeed even the new network of honorary ambassadors recently created seems to demonstrate this.
